U.S. Navy Officer Salary (2026)

This guide explains how Navy officer pay works in 2026, with a focus on what new officers usually see in their first few years.

The numbers below use 2026 pay table amounts effective January 1, 2026. Your real take-home pay will still vary based on taxes, duty location, housing situation, and your personal deductions.

If you are still early in the process, start with this guide on how to become a Navy officer.

Understanding Military Pay and Benefits

Military pay is made up of multiple parts. The big three for most new officers are:

  • Basic pay: your base salary, based on pay grade and years of service
  • BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing): housing allowance that depends on location and dependent status
  • BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence): a food allowance (set by law and updated periodically)

Many officers may also qualify for special and incentive pays depending on their community and assignment. Examples include aviation incentive pay, sea pay, submarine pay, and specialty bonuses.

Basic Pay

Basic pay is your base salary. It is set by pay grade (O-1, O-2, and so on) and years of service.

You can view the full 2026 basic pay tables for commissioned officers on DFAS: Navy officer basic pay.

Below are common early-career basic pay amounts for 2026:

Pay gradeYears of service2026 basic pay (monthly)
O-12 or less$3,826.20
O-1Over 2$4,406.40
O-22 or less$4,400.70
O-2Over 2$5,102.70
O-2Over 3$5,199.00

In general, your pay can increase in three ways:

  1. Annual pay table updates (usually effective in January)
  2. Longevity increases when you cross certain years-of-service marks
  3. Promotion increases as you move from O-1 to O-2 and beyond

Promotions and timing vary by community and individual performance. For details, see Navy officer promotion.

Allowances

Allowances are additional payments meant to cover specific costs.

The two most common allowances for new officers are BAH and BAS.

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)

BAH depends on:

  • Duty location (zip code or local area)
  • Pay grade
  • Whether you have dependents
  • Whether you are provided government housing

BAH rates change over time and differ widely by location. The best place to look up your rate is the official DoW tool: BAH Rate Lookup.

Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS)

BAS is a monthly food allowance. For 2026, the standard BAS rate for officers is $316.98 per month.

DFAS publishes the current BAS rates here: BAS.

Year 1 Earnings

Assumptions for this example:

  • O-1 with 2 years of service or less

  • 2026 pay table amounts

  • No special pays

  • BAH is not included because it depends on location and housing

  • Basic pay: $3,826.20 per month

  • BAS: $316.98 per month

  • Monthly total (basic pay + BAS): $4,143.18

  • Annual total (basic pay + BAS): $49,718.16

To estimate a full monthly total, add your BAH amount from the DoW BAH rate lookup.

Year 2 Earnings

If you are still an O-1 with less than 2 years of service, your basic pay amount is usually the same as Year 1 (unless a new pay table takes effect).

  • Basic pay: $3,826.20 per month
  • BAS: $316.98 per month
  • Monthly total (basic pay + BAS): $4,143.18
  • Annual total (basic pay + BAS): $49,718.16

If you cross a years-of-service step or promote during the year, your pay will change at that point.

Year 3 Earnings

Many officers promote to O-2 around the 2-year mark. This example uses the 2026 O-2 over 2 years of service line.

  • Basic pay: $5,102.70 per month
  • BAS: $316.98 per month
  • Monthly total (basic pay + BAS): $5,419.68
  • Annual total (basic pay + BAS): $65,036.16

Year 4 Earnings

This example uses the 2026 O-2 over 3 years of service line.

  • Basic pay: $5,199.00 per month
  • BAS: $316.98 per month
  • Monthly total (basic pay + BAS): $5,515.98
  • Annual total (basic pay + BAS): $66,191.76

Average Annual Earnings

Using the four example years above (basic pay + BAS only, without BAH):

  • Total over four years: $230,664.24
  • Average per year: $57,666.06

To include BAH, add your monthly BAH rate and multiply by 12 for each year it applies. If your duty station changes, your BAH will usually change too.

Notes

  • BAH and BAS are allowances and are generally not subject to federal income tax. Basic pay is typically taxable.
  • Your paycheck can include deductions like federal and state taxes, SGLI, TSP contributions, and other items.
  • This guide does not include special pays or bonuses. Those depend on your community, assignment, and eligibility.

Conclusion

Navy officer compensation in 2026 is more than basic pay. Most new officers receive basic pay plus BAS, and many also receive BAH depending on housing and duty location.

If you want a personalized estimate, combine:

  1. Your 2026 basic pay line from DFAS
  2. Your 2026 BAS rate from DFAS
  3. Your BAH rate from the DoW BAH rate lookup tool
