The Submarine Electronics / Computer Field (SECF) provides training to Sailors in the operation and maintenance of advanced electronic, computer, and digital equipment used in submarine combat systems, sonar, and navigation.

Training includes electricity, electronics, fiber optics, digital systems, and repair. Standards are very high. This is not a field for just anyone. It requires concentration, maturity, and the ability to accept a high degree of responsibility.

What They Do

SECF Sailors train into one of three submarine ratings:

  • Electronics Technician – Navigation (ETV). Operates navigation and radar systems. Helps keep the submarine on course.
  • Fire Control Technician (FT). Works with combat systems and weapons control. Supports guided missiles and underwater weapons.
  • Sonar Technician – Submarines (STS). Operates acoustic systems and sonar. Collects and reviews data to detect contacts below the surface.

All three ratings focus on computers and electronics. These systems support navigation, weapons, and tracking. A submarine relies on them to operate.
