What is Navy Boot Camp?

Navy boot camp is officially called Recruit Training Command. It is located in Great Lakes, Illinois.

The Navy reports boot camp as an approximately nine-week program. Training details can change, so use the official RTC site as your baseline and confirm anything time-sensitive with a recruiter.

Boot camp is designed to teach new recruits the basics of Navy life and prepare them for follow-on training. Topics commonly include:

  • Navy customs, core values, and military discipline
  • Physical training and fitness standards
  • Basic seamanship and shipboard life
  • Water survival and swim qualification
  • Basic damage control and firefighting skills
  • Teamwork, communication, and attention to detail

After graduation, most Sailors go to their next school for job training, often called “A” school.
